The proceedings commenced with an inaugural address by Consul General Somnath Ghosh, who eloquently articulated the essence of yoga under the theme “Yoga for Self and Society.” He underscored yoga not only as a hallmark of India’s cultural heritage but also as a universal practice fostering physical fitness, mental well-being, and environmental mindfulness. Consul General Ghosh commended the efforts of local yoga organizations and the Indian-American community for their pivotal role in promoting yoga across the Midwest. Furthermore, he acknowledged and honored individuals and organizations whose contributions enriched the 10th IDY celebrations.
The centerpiece of the event was the demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol, expertly led by distinguished yoga instructors including Ms. Anu Malhotra, Ms. Vimi Shukla, Ms. Parna Mazumdar, and Ms. Saba Haider. Against the backdrop of Polk Bros Park’s lush greenery, participants engaged in yoga exercises, creating a serene and energizing atmosphere that resonated with the spirit of unity and well-being.
Support for the event came from a coalition of partners, including the State Bank of India, Chicago, and a host of organizations such as Art of Living – Chicago, Sewa International USA, Isha Foundation, and many others. Their collective participation underscored the broad appeal and community spirit that yoga fosters.
In addition to the festivities at Navy Pier, the Consulate General of India actively supported numerous IDY events across its jurisdiction. These included gatherings organized by various community groups and educational institutions throughout the Midwest, further extending the reach and impact of yoga in the region.
The event at Navy Pier not only celebrated yoga as a holistic lifestyle choice but also strengthened cultural bonds and promoted wellness within the community. As the sun set over Lake Michigan, participants departed with a renewed commitment to integrating yoga into their daily lives, inspired by the shared experience of peace, harmony, and holistic health.
