Indo-US Tribune denounces Washington Post report on Pannun case

By Dr Avi Verma

The recent article published by The Washington Post alleging India’s involvement in an assassination plot abroad is a gross misrepresentation of the facts and a clear attempt to tarnish India’s reputation on the global stage. India on Tuesday said that the report published by a media outlet in the US made unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter involving an alleged plot to kill Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal said, “The report in question makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter.”

“There is an ongoing investigation of the High-Level Committee set up by the Government of India to look into the security concerns shared by the US government on networks of organized criminals, terrorists and others. Speculative and irresponsible comments on it are not helpful,” he said.

Indo-US Tribune vehemently condemns the reportage by The Washington Post and stands in solidarity with India against these baseless accusations. The insinuation that India is engaged in cross-border repression and an assassination plot is entirely unfounded and lacks credible evidence. The Washington Post’s claims of India disregarding the sovereignty of other nations and sending agents across borders are sensationalist and irresponsible.

Furthermore, the article fails to provide a balanced perspective and neglects to mention India’s longstanding commitment to upholding democratic values and respecting international law. India has consistently advocated for peaceful coexistence and has contributed positively to global efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.

The Washington Post’s attempt to link India’s actions to geopolitical competition and portray it as a repressive government is deeply flawed and misleading. India’s engagement with other nations is guided by principles of mutual respect, cooperation, and shared interests.

The Indo-US Tribune believes that the analysis presented in The Washington Post’s article is speculative and lacks in factual basis. The opinions expressed by unnamed sources and unverified claims do not meet the standards of responsible journalism.

It is imperative to recognize that India, like any other sovereign nation, has the inherent right to protect its citizens and safeguard its national security interests. Just as the United States, Russia, and other major world powers take measures to ensure their security, India has the same rights and responsibilities within the framework of international law.

The Indo-US Tribune urges The Washington Post to conduct a thorough investigation into the veracity of its claims and to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated allegations that only serve to undermine the longstanding partnership between India and the United States.

Furthermore, we call upon Western governments and media outlets to exercise caution and refrain from sensationalizing issues for political or ideological motives. The Indo-US Tribune remains committed to promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation between India and the United States based on mutual respect and shared values.

In conclusion, we stand firm in our support of India’s commitment to democracy, sovereignty, and the rule of law, and we reject any attempts to tarnish its reputation with baseless allegations and sensationalist reporting.
