The U.S. Department of Defense is investigating how components from an Australian F-35 fighter jet, originally being shipped to the United States, were diverted to Hong Kong, raising questions about supply-chain security and whether sensitive military technology could have fallen into Chinese hands.
The shipment originated in Australia and was intended to reach the United States for inspection, possible repair or disposal. According to reports, the cargo made an unexpected stop in South Korea before being redirected to Hong Kong. The reason for the change in route remains unclear.
The components reportedly include a cockpit canopy and a weapons-bay door. Sources cited in recent reports said the parts contained radar-absorbing material associated with the F-35’s low-observable capabilities. However, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles has said the equipment was not considered sensitive.
The U.S. F-35 Joint Program Office has acknowledged the shipping incident and said it is working with U.S. authorities and industry partners to recover the components, investigate what happened and introduce safeguards to prevent similar incidents.
Reports that Chinese authorities have taken possession of the parts have added another layer to the investigation. Chinese officials have not publicly provided details about the shipment, while questions remain over how the components reached Hong Kong and what happened after their arrival.
The incident is particularly significant because the F-35 is a fifth-generation stealth aircraft operated by the United States and several allied nations. Its design incorporates technologies intended to reduce its visibility to radar and other detection systems.
The timing has also drawn attention because Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting Washington for talks with President Donald Trump. The two leaders are expected to discuss trade, technology, Taiwan and other strategic issues.
It remains unclear whether the F-35 components will become part of those discussions. For now, investigators are focused on reconstructing the shipment’s journey and determining whether any sensitive technology was exposed.
