A call for civility in American politics

By Dr. Avi Verma Publisher

In the ever-evolving landscape of American politics, former President Donald Trump continues to set precedents that blur the lines of decorum and civility.

His latest barrage of verbal attacks against political leaders from both parties highlights a troubling shift towards a norm where personal insults replace policy debates and civil discourse.

Recently, Trump has not held back in his verbal onslaught against key figures in both the Democratic and Republican parties.

For instance, he referred to President Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe,” a nickname meant to undermine Biden’s mental acuity and vitality. This label isn’t new, but its repeated use signals a strategy aimed at belittling the sitting president’s competence and energy.

On the Republican side, Trump has targeted his potential 2024 primary challengers with equal ferocity. He labeled Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious,” a jab meant to mock DeSantis’s perceived self-righteousness. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has also been on the receiving end, with Trump calling him “sloppy” and a “fat pig,” attacking Christie’s physical appearance and political career simultaneously. Nikki Haley, too, was not spared, with Trump referring to her as “birdbrain,” a comment intended to demean her intellect and capabilities.

One of the more disturbing instances was Trump’s comment about Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, whom he dubbed “Crazy Bernie.” This kind of rhetoric not only belittles Sanders but also stigmatizes mental health issues, contributing to a culture of insensitivity and disrespect.

These insults are more than mere name-calling; they are strategic tools that divert attention from substantive policy discussions and create a media spectacle. Trump’s ability to dominate news cycles with his provocations keeps the focus on personalities rather than pressing issues. This tactic can rally his base, who often see his brashness as a sign of strength and authenticity, but it also deepens divisions and erodes the quality of public discourse.

The normalization of such behavior raises significant concerns about the future of political engagement in the United States. Political leaders traditionally viewed as role models now frequently engage in or are subjected to crass and personal attacks. This environment can discourage qualified individuals from entering public service, fearing that their reputations and families might suffer the brunt of public ridicule and personal smears.

Moreover, this shift towards a more antagonistic political climate can have long-term implications for governance and bipartisanship. When the focus is on tearing down opponents rather than building consensus, the possibility of collaborative policymaking diminishes.

The growing hostility can lead to legislative gridlock, where the emphasis is on obstructing the other side rather than advancing the nation’s interests.

In the broader societal context, the proliferation of such rhetoric can trickle down, influencing public behavior and attitudes. When the nation’s leaders engage in and normalize verbal assaults, it sends a message that such conduct is acceptable, even commendable. This can exacerbate polarization and incivility among the populace, making it harder to find common ground on critical issues.

For the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community in the United States, this shift in political climate can have specific ramifications. NRIs often look to the American political system as a model of democracy and governance.

The degradation of political discourse can tarnish this image and affect how the NRI community perceives and engages with the political process.

Additionally, the heightened political polarization and hostility can lead to a less welcoming environment for immigrants, affecting their sense of belonging and safety.

To move forward, it is essential for leaders across the political spectrum to recommit to a higher standard of discourse. Voters also play a crucial role by demanding more from their representatives, prioritizing integrity and constructive dialogue over sensationalism and hostility.

The future of American democracy depends on a collective effort to restore decency and respect in political interactions. Only then can the nation hope to address its challenges effectively and unitedly.
