Paris Paralympics: Yogesh Kathuniya Wins Silver in Men’s Discus Throw F56
Yogesh Kathuniya clinched the silver medal in the Men’s Discus Throw – F56 event at the Paris Paralympics on Monday.
Kathuniya, who also secured silver in the F56 category at the World Para-Athletics Championships in May, achieved his season’s best throw of 42.22 meters. He finished behind Brazil’s Claudiney Batista dos Santos, who set a Paralympic record with a throw of 46.86 meters.
Greece’s Konstantinos Tzounis took the bronze with a best throw of 41.32 meters.
Kathuniya marked his silver-winning throw on his first attempt and followed up with throws of 41.50 meters, 41.55 meters, 40.33 meters, 40.89 meters, and 39.68 meters.
Notably, the 27-year-old Indian also won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics with a best throw of 44.38 meters, finishing behind Santos. At the Paris 2023 Para Athletics World Championships, he again secured silver behind the Brazilian, adding to his Paralympic success.
Kathuniya, who developed Guillain-Barre syndrome at age 9, began his journey in Para sports in 2017 during college. Although he explored various disciplines, he found his passion in the discus throw.
Kathuniya’s silver medal marks India’s eighth medal at the Paris Para Games and the fourth in athletics. Earlier, Nishad won silver in the men’s high jump T47, and Preethi Pal earned bronze in both the 100m and 200m T35 events.
India also won four medals in para shooting. Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal took gold and bronze, respectively, in the 10m air rifle shooting standing SH1 class. Manish Narwal (men’s 10m air pistol SH1) and Rubina Francis (women’s 10m air pistol SH1) earned silver and bronze, respectively.
