6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Indonesia’s Gorontalo Province; No Tsunami Alert Issued
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia’s Gorontalo province early Tuesday morning, but no tsunami warning was issued, according to the country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency.
The quake struck at 2:51 A.M. Jakarta time, with its epicenter located 77 km southwest of Gorontalo city at a depth of 132 km beneath the seabed. The agency initially reported the magnitude as 6.4 before downgrading it.
Sembiring Hendri, head of the emergency unit at the provincial disaster management agency, told Xinhua news agency that the tremors were strongly felt, causing residents to rush outside their homes. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties, though assessments are ongoing.
Indonesia, located within the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” is an archipelago frequently affected by seismic activity, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
