EAM Jaishankar Meets G4 Foreign Ministers on UNGA Sidelines

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with the foreign ministers of the G4 countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation among Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan, particularly in the context of global governance reforms. Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to a more representative and accountable UN Security Council, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts to address pressing international issues.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar convened with his counterparts from the G4 countries—Brazil, Germany, and Japan—on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly. The meeting underscored the group’s commitment to urgent reform of the UN Security Council through text-based negotiations.

“Glad to join the traditional #G4 Foreign Ministers Meeting with colleagues Annalena Baerbock (Germany), Yoko Kamikawa (Japan), and Mauro Vieira (Brazil) in New York today. The G4 reaffirmed its commitment to urgent UN Security Council reform through Text-Based Negotiations,” Jaishankar noted on X after the meeting.

The G4 nations—India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan—support each other’s aspirations for permanent seats on the UN Security Council.

In addition, Jaishankar met with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, where they discussed cooperation in energy, health, and economic sectors, as well as reformed multilateralism. “Pleased to meet FM @yvangil of Venezuela today on the sidelines of #UNGA79. Discussed energy, health, and economic cooperation, along with reformed multilateralism,” he posted on X.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Venezuela enjoy a history of “warm relations” and share similar views on key international, political, and economic issues. The two countries will commemorate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2024.
