Hungary and Ukraine Seek to Strengthen Relations

Hungary and Ukraine are keen to enhance their bilateral relations, according to Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto.

At a joint press conference with newly-appointed Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha, Szijjarto reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that diplomacy is the only way to alleviate the suffering of millions. “Hungary supports all initiatives aimed at achieving peace as soon as possible,” he noted, highlighting that the country has provided humanitarian assistance and welcomed over 1.4 million Ukrainian refugees since the conflict began.

Szijjarto also addressed Hungary’s role in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, stating that the country is prepared to contribute significantly to rebuilding efforts. “We are actively participating in restoring educational, healthcare, and administrative institutions,” he said.

On the energy front, Hungary has supplied over three billion cubic meters of gas to Ukraine and has become its largest source of electricity imports, with 45 percent of Ukraine’s electricity imports coming from or through Hungary during the summer.

While praising the cooperation between the two nations, Szijjarto emphasized that mutual respect and goodwill must be the foundation of their relationship. He expressed Hungary’s expectation for Ukraine to restore the rights of the Hungarian national community, particularly regarding access to their mother tongue, and confirmed that Hungary has submitted a detailed proposal to Ukraine on this issue.

Sybiha highlighted the significance of strengthening Ukraine’s relations with its Western neighbors, especially Hungary. He noted Ukraine’s commitment to securing peace and advancing its aspirations for EU and NATO membership, indicating that discussions with Szijjarto were characterized by mutual respect and focused on key national interests.

He also extended an invitation to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to visit Kyiv. Sybiha expressed gratitude for Hungary’s support in maintaining Ukraine’s territorial integrity and its humanitarian assistance, including help in training military doctors, demining efforts, and establishing a bilingual school in Hungary to preserve Ukrainian identity.

He thanked Hungary for its participation in international peace efforts and expressed hope for continued support, especially during Hungary’s EU presidency.
