Biden Deploys Soldiers to Address Hurricane Helene’s Aftermath as Death Toll Reaches 175
US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that he has directed Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin to deploy 1,000 active-duty soldiers to assist with ongoing response and recovery efforts related to Hurricane Helene.
“Even before Hurricane Helene made landfall, I instructed my team to take every possible measure to support the communities in the storm’s path. I mobilized the entire federal government to ensure all resources were available to save lives and aid those in urgent need,” the President stated.
He noted that these soldiers will augment the North Carolina National Guard, enhancing efforts to deliver crucial supplies such as food, water, and medicine to isolated communities. “They possess the manpower and logistical capabilities necessary to expedite this vital work,” Biden explained. These active-duty troops will join hundreds of National Guard members already deployed under state authorities.
Biden described Hurricane Helene as a storm of historic magnitude, expressing his condolences to those who have suffered devastating losses. “My heart goes out to everyone affected. We are here for you and will continue to support you for as long as necessary,” he added.
As of now, at least 175 lives have been lost due to Hurricane Helene, making it one of the deadliest storms to strike the US in recent history. Hundreds remain unaccounted for, with search and rescue teams facing challenges in reaching remote areas.
Aid deliveries have been conducted through airdrops and using mules, and the federal government has warned that the recovery efforts could take years.
Biden plans to visit the severely impacted areas of North Carolina and South Carolina, while Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to travel to neighboring Georgia.
