Tamil Nadu Police Targets Illegal Bangladeshi Nationals

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Tamil Nadu Police is actively pursuing Bangladeshi nationals who are allegedly residing in the state while posing as Bengali workers. This initiative comes in response to information from central intelligence agencies regarding several Bangladeshi nationals with questionable credentials finding refuge in Tamil Nadu.

In a recent operation, police arrested four Bangladeshi nationals in the Namakkal district. Acting on a specific tip-off, authorities discovered that three of the individuals lacked proper documentation, while one held a valid passport. The individual with the passport was promptly repatriated to Bangladesh, while the others were remanded to Puzhal Central Prison.

The SIT is expanding its investigation to areas including Tiruppur, Namakkal, Virudhunagar, and Thoothukudi, which are known for their high concentrations of immigrant laborers. Police sources indicated that they have gathered specific leads and are scrutinizing the documents of various Bengali workers in these regions. Investigators are also interrogating middlemen suspected of facilitating the entry of these workers into Tamil Nadu.

These districts are home to several key industries, such as salt production, firecrackers, garment manufacturing, and fish processing, all of which attract a significant number of migrant workers. Consequently, the police are focusing their efforts here to determine the presence of any illegal Bangladeshi workers.

Furthermore, central intelligence agencies have alerted the Tamil Nadu Police about wanted criminals from Bangladesh who may have entered the state. There are also concerns regarding the presence of members from the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir. In September, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids across 11 locations in Tamil Nadu, resulting in the arrest of six individuals connected to this organization.
