Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prior to his two-day visit to Laos for the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit, spoke with Ratan Tata’s brother, Noel Tata, to express his condolences.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will represent the Government of India at Ratan Tata’s funeral.

Earlier, PM Modi took to X to share his grief over the passing of Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, who died at Breach Candy Hospital due to age-related health issues.

In his tribute, Modi described Ratan Tata as a “visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.” He acknowledged Tata’s stable leadership at one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses and noted that his influence extended far beyond the corporate world. “He endeared himself to many through his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to improving our society,” the PM wrote.

Modi highlighted Tata’s passion for “dreaming big and giving back,” commending his advocacy for causes such as education, healthcare, sanitation, and animal welfare.

Reflecting on his memories with Tata, Modi shared, “My mind is filled with countless interactions with Shri Ratan Tata Ji. I would meet him frequently in Gujarat when I was the Chief Minister, exchanging views on various issues. His perspectives were always enriching. These interactions continued when I moved to Delhi. I am extremely pained by his passing. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers during this difficult time. Om Shanti.”

Ratan Tata, 86, passed away at Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been admitted on Monday for age-related health concerns.

In a statement, the family expressed a “profound sense of loss” and announced that his mortal remains will be taken to the NCPA Lawns around 10:30 a.m. to allow the public to pay their respects. At approximately 4 p.m., Tata’s body will proceed from Nariman Point to the Worli Crematorium for the last rites.

During the cremation, his remains, draped in the national flag, will receive a police gun salute before being consigned to the flames.
