First-ever Raavan Dahan marks Dushehra celebrations at Shree Ganesh Mandir, Devon Avenue

In a remarkable display of community spirit, Shree Ganesh Mandir on Devon Avenue, Chicago, celebrated its inaugural Raavan Dahan, bringing the Indian festival of Dushehra to life in Little India. This event marked a significant milestone for the local Indian community, concluding a successful Navratri season.

What initially seemed like a daunting challenge transformed into a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of a committed group of volunteers who made history by organizing this first-ever Raavan Dahan—the symbolic burning of the demon king Ravana—within this vibrant neighborhood.

Community participation and celebrations

The festivities received enthusiastic support from the local community, with many students and volunteers contributing their efforts. Traditional Garba dancing, an essential aspect of Navratri, infused the event with energy and joy, attracting participants of all ages.

Their performances were crucial in bringing the timeless tale of good triumphing over evil to life.

Spiritual guidance and cultural contributions

Raj Pundit Ji and Kishore Ji provided ongoing spiritual guidance, conducting Puja and Havan throughout the event. Their commitment helped ground the celebrations in traditional rituals, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

The event was further enlivened by the vibrant beats of Dhol and Dholak, played by Ajay Randhawa, while DJ Haseeb, known as DJ-Fuzon, expertly managed the sound engineering, ensuring that the music and performances resonated with everyone present.

A special Mata Ki Choki, hosted by Dr. Avi Verma, filled the temple with devotion. Dr. Verma’s leadership and enthusiasm drew a full house, solidifying his reputation in devotional gatherings across the Midwest.
