Brazilian President Injured, Cancels Trip to BRICS Summit in Russia

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been hospitalized in Brasilia after sustaining a head injury at home on October 19, leading to the cancellation of his planned trip to the upcoming BRICS Summit in Russia.

His office announced on Sunday that Lula, 78, will not attend the 16th summit, scheduled for October 22 to 24 in Kazan, due to medical advice to avoid long-haul flights. However, he will participate via video conference from Brasilia, where he will continue his regular work schedule.

Lula da Silva was admitted to the hospital with a bruise on the occipital region of his head. Following a medical evaluation, doctors advised him against air travel but confirmed he could engage in all other activities.

The Brazilian government also stated that Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has been designated to lead the delegation at the BRICS summit, which departed on Sunday. Lula will celebrate his 79th birthday on October 27.
