Four killed in road accident in West Bengal
Kolkata, Oct 27 (IANS) Four people lost their lives in a tragic road accident on National Highway 116 in Tamluk, East Midnapore district of West Bengal.
One person injured in the accident, which occurred on Saturday night, is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Prashanta Roy, Rajendra Samanta, and Bhaskar Modok, while the identity of a fourth victim, a woman, remains unknown.
Eyewitnesses reported that a speeding four-wheeler collided head-on with another vehicle, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then struck three cyclists in the lane before plunging into a canal adjacent to the highway.
Roy and Samanta, both cyclists, and driver Modok died at the scene. The unidentified woman was a passenger in the four-wheeler, while a third cyclist, whose identity is still pending, is receiving medical care.
Roy and Samanta were residents of Bhandarberia in Tamluk, and Modok hailed from Ghatal in the neighboring West Midnapore district.
Local residents initially rushed to the scene to assist with rescue efforts, followed by a substantial police contingent from the local station.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and family members of the identified deceased have been notified.
Eyewitnesses noted that rescuers faced challenges in retrieving the bodies of the driver and the woman passenger from the wreckage.
