North Korea enhances security for Kim Jong-un amid assassination fears

North Korea is increasing security measures for leader Kim Jong-un due to concerns over a potential assassination attempt, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), which briefed lawmakers on Tuesday.

During a parliamentary audit session, NIS officials informed representatives, including Rep. Lee Seong-kweun from the ruling People Power Party and Rep. Park Sun-won of the main opposition Democratic Party, about the heightened security protocols. The NIS reported that Kim’s public appearances this year have surged to 110, a 60% increase compared to last year, prompting the use of communications jamming vehicles and drone detection technology.

Additionally, the agency noted that North Korea has discontinued the use of the “juche” calendar—an era system established by the late founder Kim Il-sung—and is intensifying efforts to solidify Kim Jong-un’s authority as the nation’s singular leader.

Regarding Kim’s daughter, Ju-ae, the NIS indicated that her position appears to be strengthening, as evidenced by her recent public appearances, including one where she was accompanied by Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un’s influential sister.
