Bollywood Celebs Mourn the Passing of Iconic Designer Rohit Bal
A wave of sorrow swept through Bollywood on Saturday as stars including Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ananya Panday, and others mourned the death of celebrated fashion designer Rohit Bal, affectionately known as “Gudda,” who passed away at the age of 63.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) announced his passing late on November 1, noting that Bal had been battling a heart ailment and had spent time in intensive care earlier this year.
In an emotional post on Instagram, the FDCI wrote: “We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal. A founding member of the FDCI, Bal was known for his unique fusion of traditional motifs with modern aesthetics. His work redefined Indian fashion and inspired countless generations. His legacy of artistry and innovation will forever resonate in the fashion world. Rest in peace, GUDDA. You are a legend.”
Ananya Panday, who walked the runway for Bal at the Lakme Fashion Week, shared a heartfelt tribute on her Instagram stories, posting a picture of them together and captioning it: “Gudda. Om Shanti.”
Sonam Kapoor expressed her grief with a heartfelt note, accompanied by images, including a WhatsApp chat with the designer. She wrote, “Dear Gudda, I heard about your passing on my way to celebrate Diwali in your gorgeous creation that you generously lent to me for the second time. I’ve been blessed to have known you, worn your designs, and walked for you multiple times. I hope you’re at peace. Always your biggest fan.”
Actor Sidharth Malhotra shared a photo with Bal, writing, “Deeply saddened by the loss. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.”
Kareena Kapoor Khan shared nostalgic pictures of Bal from his younger days, captioning them with red, white, and black heart emojis.
Gulshan Devaiah paid tribute by writing, “ROHIT BAL: 8 MAY 1961 – 1 NOVEMBER 2024.”
Nimrat Kaur referred to him as a “visionary, trailblazer, icon” and added, “Rest in Excellence #RohitBal #RIPRohitBal.”
Bal’s influence extended beyond India, with his creations worn by global icons such as Pamela Anderson, Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, and Naomi Campbell.
The iconic designer will be cremated on Saturday at the Lodhi Road Crematorium in the National Capital.
