Winter storm: at least 4 dead as heavy snow and ice create dire travel conditions
A powerful winter storm has left at least four people dead as heavy snow and ice created hazardous travel conditions across multiple states in the U.S. over the weekend.
The storm, which began to intensify on Friday, blanketed parts of the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic with several inches of snow and freezing rain. Authorities have warned residents to stay off the roads as the icy conditions have caused widespread accidents and flight cancellations.
In Ohio, three people were confirmed dead after their vehicle crashed due to slippery roads, while a fourth fatality occurred in Pennsylvania after a vehicle slid off the road and hit a tree. Emergency teams have been working around the clock to assist stranded motorists and clear snow from blocked highways.
Airports have been hit hard as well, with over 1,000 flights cancelled or delayed across major hubs including Chicago O’Hare, Boston Logan, and New York’s LaGuardia. The National Weather Service has issued multiple winter storm warnings, advising people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Meteorologists expect the storm to continue through the early part of the week, with additional snow and freezing rain expected to impact the Northeast and New England. Emergency management officials are closely monitoring the storm’s progress and have urged residents to remain prepared for continued disruptions.
