Shakira dedicates Grammy award to immigrant communities and hardworking women

Shakira used her Grammy acceptance speech to highlight the struggles of immigrants and honor hardworking women.

The Colombian singer-songwriter won Best Latin Pop Album for Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran and took the moment to express solidarity with immigrant communities.

“To all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country—you are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you,” she said.

Shakira also paid tribute to hardworking women, saying, “This is for all of those women who work hard every day to provide for their families. You are the true She-wolves.”

Shakira speaks on immigration and Latino resilience

Before the ceremony, Shakira addressed immigration challenges in an interview with LA Times en Español, recalling her own experiences.

“I was also an immigrant who came here to this city with a dream. I know what setbacks feel like, but I also know how strong our people are. Latinos are unstoppable, and I won’t tire of fighting with them and for them. Together, we will persevere.”

Controversial Grammy jokes on immigration

Host Trevor Noah made a controversial joke, referring to Shakira as “the greatest thing out of Colombia that isn’t a Class A felony.”

He also quipped that Grammy winners are chosen by 13,000 Recording Academy members, including ‘20 million illegal immigrants’—a remark that fell flat as protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies unfolded nearby.

Since Trump’s re-election, immigration enforcement has intensified, with ICE raids and mass deportations causing widespread fear across the country.

Shakira’s speech and activism continue to resonate, reinforcing her commitment to advocating for immigrant rights and Latino empowerment.
