Hold discussion on ethnic situation in Manipur, says CM Biren Singh
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Monday urged all stakeholders, including academicians, to engage in a thorough discussion on the current ethnic situation in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Art and Culture building and an Open Gym at Manipur University, the Chief Minister stressed the need for discussions with faculties, teachers, researchers, and students to understand the core issues behind the ethnic conflict. “Now is the time for struggle filled with many adversities and challenges, but one should be aware of the goal,” he said.
Biren Singh emphasized the role of educational institutions in clearing public confusion. He suggested that seminars or legal camps be organized to create awareness about issues such as border fencing and other related challenges.
Highlighting the importance of historical knowledge, the Chief Minister mentioned the publication of the book Know Manipur, which aims to educate people about their roots and the history of the land. “Our society would move forward when people start acting with a sense of belongingness to the land and a sense of ownership,” he added, noting that while the state has abundant talent, it must be harnessed with commitment and ownership.
In addition to these remarks, Biren Singh laid the foundation stones for a 33/11 KVA electric sub-station and a swimming pool within the Manipur University campus. He reiterated that educational institutions—universities, schools, and colleges—are like temples, nurturing individuals who eventually contribute to and shape society.
The Chief Minister recalled that he had attended a function in the same auditorium in the presence of the Vice-President in May 2023, when unfortunate ethnic violence erupted in the state. He prayed for peace to return and reiterated that educational institutions must remain free from disturbances.
Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, in his presidential address, acknowledged the consistent support from the state and Central governments that has allowed the varsity to evolve from a JNU PG Centre to a full-fledged Central University. He noted that the university now comprises 44 departments, with 119 affiliated colleges and around 6,900 students registered in its departments, in addition to 68,000 students enrolled in the affiliated colleges.
