Trump imposes sanctions on ICC over Israel and US investigations

Former US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order sanctioning the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing it of targeting the US and its ally Israel with “illegitimate and baseless actions.”

The order imposes financial and visa restrictions on individuals involved in ICC investigations of US or allied citizens. It follows the ICC’s arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a Hamas commander over alleged war crimes in Gaza—moves the White House condemned as creating a “shameful moral equivalency.”

Trump’s order claims the ICC’s actions undermine US and Israeli sovereignty, restrict Israel’s right to self-defense, and threaten national security. The US, which is not a party to the ICC, has consistently rejected its jurisdiction.

The move aligns with Trump’s previous efforts to sanction the ICC, which President Joe Biden later reversed. Biden has also criticized the ICC’s warrant for Netanyahu, calling it “outrageous.”

Trump announced the order while Netanyahu was visiting Washington, where the Israeli leader also met with US lawmakers. The visit comes amid controversy over Trump’s earlier proposal for the US to take over Gaza and resettle Palestinians—an idea widely condemned by Arab leaders and the UN.
