Trump warns Hamas as US confirms direct hostage talks
US President Donald Trump has issued a final warning to Hamas, demanding the release of hostages held in Gaza, as the White House confirms direct negotiations with the group for the first time.
Trump, in a strongly worded Truth Social post, threatened Hamas with severe consequences if they did not comply.
“‘Shalom Hamas’ means Hello and Goodbye – You can choose. Release all of the Hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you,” he wrote.
Trump also pledged unwavering support for Israel, stating that he was “sending Israel everything it needs to finish the job.”
US-Hamas talks confirmed
The White House acknowledged for the first time that it is in direct talks with Hamas, despite Washington’s long-standing policy of avoiding engagement with groups it designates as terrorist organizations.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Israel had been consulted before the negotiations began. She emphasized that the US was acting in the best interest of its people and that Special Envoy for Hostages, Adam Boehler, was leading the efforts.
“Two direct meetings have taken place between Hamas and a US official, preceded by several communications,” a Palestinian source told the BBC.
Reports indicate that talks have been held in Qatar, where Hamas has had a base since 2012. Qatar has played a key role in ceasefire negotiations and diplomatic efforts in the region.
Israel’s response and ongoing hostage crisis
Israel estimates that 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with up to 24 believed to be alive. Among them are US citizens, making their release a priority for Washington.
While Israel has not provided details on the US-Hamas talks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that Israel has “expressed its position” on the matter.
This development marks a significant shift in US diplomacy, as direct negotiations with Hamas signal a new approach in efforts to secure the release of hostages and resolve the ongoing conflict.
