Russian president meets Trump’s envoy, discusses ceasefire proposal

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and was provided with “additional details” regarding the recent US-Ukrainian talks held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Kremlin announced on Friday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that during the meeting on Thursday, Putin also gave Witkoff “information and additional signals for President Trump,” according to RT.

The US-Ukrainian talks in Jeddah on Tuesday resulted in Kiev agreeing to a proposed 30-day ceasefire with Russia. The US also announced it would resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

Witkoff traveled to Moscow to deliver the details of the proposal to Russian officials, who have yet to issue a formal response.

Peskov confirmed that Witkoff met with Putin to deliver further information about the proposal.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Putin said Russia “absolutely supports” the idea of resolving the Ukraine conflict through peaceful means but stressed the need to clarify the terms.

“…The idea itself is the right one, and we certainly support it. But there are questions that we have to discuss. I think we need to work with our American partners. Maybe I will speak to President Trump. But we support the idea of ending this conflict through peaceful means,” Putin said, indicating he is open to direct talks with Trump.

Trump also expressed willingness for a dialogue, saying, “(Putin) put out a very promising statement, but it wasn’t complete. And, yeah, I’d love to meet with him or talk to him.”

However, Putin underscored that all details of the ceasefire must be clarified. He noted that Moscow seeks a long-term solution rather than a temporary pause.

He emphasized the need for a system of “control and verification” to monitor any truce and to prevent Ukraine from using the ceasefire to rearm and strengthen its forces. Putin also raised concerns about the status of Ukrainian troops currently surrounded in Russia’s Kursk Region following their incursion last year.
