South Korea eyes UAE rail, infrastructure projects
A high-level South Korean delegation is set to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week to advance Seoul’s participation in high-speed rail and infrastructure development projects, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Wednesday.
Led by Land Minister Park Sang-woo, the group will meet UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei on Friday. Discussions will center around strengthening bilateral ties in the transport sector, with a focus on the UAE’s planned high-speed rail project linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai, according to Yonhap news agency.
A joint public-private team has been assembled for the bid, comprising Korea National Railway, Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL), Hyundai Rotem Co., and POSCO E&C. This team has already passed the prequalification phase of the bidding process.
During the visit, the delegation will showcase South Korea’s technological capabilities and the economic competitiveness of its high-speed rail systems. They will also cite successful export agreements with Uzbekistan and Morocco to bolster their case.
The talks will include follow-up cooperation stemming from a memorandum of understanding signed during the UAE President’s state visit to South Korea last year. The agreement aims for the two countries to jointly pursue infrastructure opportunities in third markets, especially in post-conflict recovery areas—leveraging South Korea’s engineering expertise and the UAE’s financial strength.
