Michigan Democrat Shri Thanedar files articles of impeachment against President Trump

U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) introduced a resolution Monday to impeach President Donald Trump, accusing him of “a sweeping abuse of power, flagrant violations of the Constitution, and acts of tyranny that undermine American democracy.” In a sharply worded statement, Thanedar accused the president of ignoring Congress, the courts, and the Constitution. “When Trump ignores the Constitution, Congress, and the courts, he is not ‘fighting for America.’ He is tearing it down and endangering our democracy,” Thanedar said. The Michigan Democrat’s resolution outlines seven articles of impeachment, including Trump’s defiance of a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling in the controversial deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia — a man mistakenly sent to El Salvador — and alleged misuse of executive power through unauthorized budget cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Thanedar also cited other grievances, such as Trump’s steep tariffs impacting global markets, his treatment of the press and First Amendment freedoms, alleged interference in the justice system, and the unauthorized collection of Americans’ personal data.

“This has to be the final straw,” Thanedar said, referencing the Supreme Court ruling. “It’s time we impeach Donald J. Trump.”

However, the resolution is widely expected to go nowhere in the Republican-controlled House. It will likely be referred to the House Judiciary Committee, where GOP leadership holds the majority. Without bipartisan support, the resolution stands little chance of advancing to a full vote or resulting in a Senate conviction, which would require a two-thirds majority.

Republican lawmakers swiftly dismissed Thanedar’s efforts. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), a close Trump ally and House Republican Conference Chair, called the resolution “a baseless political stunt.”

“Democrats continue to obsess over President Trump while ignoring the real issues Americans care about—like the economy, the border crisis, and national security,” Stefanik said in a statement. “This impeachment push is nothing more than an election-year distraction by a desperate congressman facing a tough primary.”

Thanedar, who faces primary challenges from within his own party ahead of the 2026 election, has denied that the resolution is politically motivated. “This is about principle, not politics,” he said.

Although no coordinated Democratic effort to impeach Trump has emerged, Thanedar’s move underscores the deep divisions in Congress—and the lingering tensions over Trump’s conduct in office during his second term.
