Buffalo Grove families join hands in highway cleanup led by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh
In an inspiring show of civic responsibility and community spirit, the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) of Buffalo Grove organized a successful highway cleanup this past weekend as part of its ongoing commitment to service, or sewa. The initiative brought together 19 dedicated volunteers, including families and youth, to clean a 1.5-mile stretch of Aptakisic Road adopted by the organization more than a decade ago.
Despite the brisk morning temperatures, the participants—some as young as middle school students—arrived with warm enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose. For many, it wasn’t just about picking up litter—it was about instilling a sense of pride, responsibility, and community engagement within the next generation.
“The cleanup is more than just a chore—it’s a chance for families to bond over a shared value of giving back,” said an HSS volunteer. “Our children learn that service to society is part of our cultural identity.”
The smiles, waves, and thumbs-up from passing drivers served as a powerful reminder that small efforts can leave a big impact. Volunteers reported a strong sense of fulfillment from helping preserve the beauty and cleanliness of their community’s public spaces. HSS, a national organization dedicated to preserving Hindu values through community engagement and character building, has long emphasized the importance of sewa as a fundamental part of its mission. Its Buffalo Grove chapter continues to set an example of how grassroots service activities can foster unity, responsibility, and environmental consciousness among youth and adults alike.
As the cleanup concluded, one parent summed it up best: “Today was not just about cleaning the road. It was about laying down values that will travel much farther.”
