
FIA Chicago marks Mother’s Day and India’s Independence Day kick-off
The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of Chicago hosted a community event to mark Mother’s Day and initiate the countdown to India’s 79th Independence Day celebrations. The event brought together local families, public officials, and community members for an evening of tributes, performances, and announcements.
The gathering began with a meet-and-greet, photo booths, and refreshments. The décor reflected the theme of motherhood, with warm lighting and welcoming colors. Dignitaries in attendance included Consul General of India in Chicago Somnath Ghosh, Illinois State Senator Laura Murphy, and Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison, each of whom briefly addressed the audience.
The program featured welcoming remarks, musical performances, and cultural segments. Songs were performed by Rita Shah, and a group dance tribute to motherhood was choreographed by Cultural Secretaries Pika Munshi and Fal Rana. A candle-lighting ceremony honored mothers who are no longer present.The evening also included announcements about FIA’s upcoming Independence Day Gala, scheduled for August 8, 2025, with performances by Jatin Pandit and Raahul Pandit. Ajeet Singh was introduced as Chair of the banquet and Neil Khot was invited to lead the celebration efforts. An announcement was also made regarding Khot’s candidacy for Congress in the 8th district.
An awards ceremony recognized several women in the community as “Ideal Mothers.” Honorees included Rita Shah, Vinita Gulabani, Pratibha Jairath, Dr. Sheila Dipak Shah, Anu Malhotra, Richa Chand, Sonia Luther, Purnima Makkar, and Madhu Rohatgi. Children from SEWA offered tributes to their mothers during this segment.
The musical portion of the evening featured performances by Hitesh Master and Band, Dr. Radhika Chimata, Sameer Saini, Dr. Sheila Shah, and Sargam Kapoor. A video tribute to mothers, along with a promotional video for the upcoming Independence Day concert, was presented by Warenium Media Services.
The event was supported by volunteers, including over 18 SEWA youth who assisted with registration and logistics. Photography was provided by Ramesh Punatar and Jayanti Oza. Catering was provided by Tasty Bites USA, and the venue, India Hub, was made available by Harish Kolasani.
FIA Chicago, a non-profit organization, represents the Indian-American community in the Midwest and aims to strengthen ties between the U.S. and India through cultural and civic engagement.
