Russia, Ukraine to begin ceasefire talks ‘immediately’, says Trump

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Russia and Ukraine will begin immediate negotiations toward a ceasefire, with the Vatican offering to host the talks.

The announcement followed a two-hour phone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump later shared details of the call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the conversation with Putin as “excellent” and said both nations are ready to work toward ending the war. He emphasized that only Russia and Ukraine could determine the terms of the ceasefire, as they are “the only ones who truly know the details.”

Trump added that Russia is interested in boosting trade with the US once peace is restored, and he envisions major economic opportunities for both Russia and Ukraine in the post-war reconstruction period.

He confirmed that the Vatican, represented by the Pope, has expressed interest in hosting the negotiations.
