Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, has had an impactful and eventful week, highlighting his continued commitment to civil rights, veterans’ recognition, and community safety. Through a series of powerful public appearances and statements, Krishnamoorthi reinforced his role as one of the nation’s most responsive and values-driven lawmakers.
Condemning antisemitic violence in Boulder
In the wake of a deeply disturbing antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado, where peaceful demonstrators were targeted during a vigil for hostages held by Hamas, Congressman Krishnamoorthi issued a strongly worded condemnation. Among the victims was a Holocaust survivor, reportedly injured in the violence.
“I am horrified by the antisemitic attack that targeted peaceful demonstrators in Boulder — an act of terror that has no place in our country,” said Krishnamoorthi in his statement.
“We must confront antisemitism wherever it rears its head—clearly, forcefully, and without hesitation. I stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in Boulder and across America today and every day.”
His statement came at a time when antisemitic incidents are on the rise in the United States and was praised by several interfaith groups as a necessary moral stance.
Honoring Vietnam War veterans with long-overdue recognition
In a heartfelt ceremony held in Schaumburg, Congressman Krishnamoorthi honored four Vietnam-era veterans for their distinguished service. Joseph Leuze, Jon Fisher, and Doug Elwell received official Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Pins as a national symbol of gratitude. The most emotional moment came when Douglas Beckmann, a local constituent, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for acts of heroism during combat.
Beckmann had contacted the Congressman’s office after struggling to recover his military records and overdue honors. The Congressman’s team worked directly with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to secure documentation of the medals Beckmann had earned but never received. His heroic act on April 11, 1970—administering medical aid under fire—was finally honored publicly after more than five decades.
“These American veterans embody the very best of our nation—serving with courage, humility, and unwavering dedication,” Krishnamoorthi said.
“We owe it to every veteran to ensure their sacrifices are acknowledged and remembered.”
The Congressman’s office continues to assist veterans and their families in accessing records, recognition, and benefits. Veterans interested in similar support are encouraged to contact his office.
Recognized as 2024 Governmental Leader of the Year
Congressman Krishnamoorthi was also honored this week by the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) with the prestigious 2024 Governmental Leader of the Year Award. The award recognized his steadfast advocacy for local communities, especially in response to public safety concerns surrounding the Canadian Pacific–Kansas City Southern Railway merger.
The award was presented during DMMC’s Annual Dinner and Recognition Ceremony by outgoing President Mayor Scott Levin of Elmhurst, with nominations submitted by Mayor Jeff Pruyn of Itasca and Mayor Rodney Craig of Hanover Park.
“This recognition is a testament to what we can achieve when local and federal leaders work hand-in-hand,” said Krishnamoorthi.
“Whether it’s protecting emergency response routes or strengthening our infrastructure, I will continue standing with our mayors, first responders, and families to ensure public safety remains a top priority.”
The DMMC represents over one million residents across DuPage County and is known for its collaborative, bipartisan approach to regional policy.
