Iran calls US nuclear proposal ‘insincere’ for excluding sanctions relief

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has dismissed a recent U.S. proposal for reviving the nuclear deal, calling it “contradictory and insincere” for failing to include the removal of sanctions.

Speaking during an open session of parliament in Tehran, Qalibaf criticized the proposal delivered via Oman in late May, as part of ongoing indirect negotiations between Iran and the U.S. He said Iran is committed to proving the peaceful nature of its nuclear program under a 2020 parliamentary law, but expects sanctions relief, economic guarantees, and the continued right to enrich uranium in return.

“The fact that the U.S. proposal does not even mention lifting sanctions clearly shows Washington’s contradictory and insincere approach in the nuclear talks,” Qalibaf stated.

He further urged U.S. President Donald Trump to reconsider his strategy if he genuinely seeks a nuclear agreement, accusing him of following “failed ideas” promoted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The U.S. and Iran have engaged in five rounds of indirect talks since April, mediated by Oman, aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions. However, Washington’s insistence on halting uranium enrichment remains a key sticking point.

Iran continues to demand the preservation of its right to enrich uranium and insists any deal must guarantee tangible economic benefits. Tehran has long argued that sanctions are the root cause of stalled progress in negotiations.

Qalibaf’s comments underscore Iran’s skepticism toward the Biden administration’s diplomatic efforts and suggest that without concrete steps on sanctions relief, prospects for a renewed nuclear deal remain dim.
