Indian diaspora upbeat ahead of PM Modi’s Canada visit
Anticipation is running high among the Indian diaspora in Canada ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country for the G7 Summit. The visit, at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, is seen as a potential turning point in the strained India–Canada relationship.
This marks PM Modi’s first visit to Canada since diplomatic tensions flared in 2023. Indian-origin residents, including professionals, entrepreneurs, and students, are hopeful that the visit will open the door to renewed cooperation.
“There’s real excitement in the community. We hope this leads to progress for both countries,” said Tarun Jain, an IT professional in Toronto.
Businessman Gautam Sevda from Vancouver noted, “Canada’s resources and India’s youth can complement each other well.”
Entrepreneur Akshay Saxena added, “India has risen on the global stage, and this visit could reshape our ties positively.”
Rahul Kumar, also from the tech sector, summed up the sentiment: “India is our homeland, Canada is our workplace. Strong ties between the two are in everyone’s interest.”
Relations soured after controversial allegations from former PM Trudeau in 2023. Now, both nations seem ready to move forward.
