PM Modi arrives in Canada for G7 Summit reset

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada, on Monday to attend the G7 Summit, following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He was warmly received by Acting Indian High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, Canadian officials, and representatives of Canada’s First Nations.

PM Modi will head to Kananaskis, a scenic mountain town hosting this year’s G7 Summit under tight security. The Indian leader’s participation in the summit comes after a brief stop in Cyprus, where he held extensive talks with President Nikos Christodoulides on strengthening India–Cyprus relations.

Ahead of his visit, Modi stated on X that the summit presents “a great platform to exchange perspectives on various global issues and elaborate on the priorities of the Global South.”

At the summit, he is expected to engage with key G7 leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa.

PM Modi’s arrival follows strained India–Canada ties during Justin Trudeau’s tenure, marked by tensions over Khalistan-related issues. His presence, however, signals a possible diplomatic reset under new leadership.

Canadian Prime Minister Carney is seen as eager to mend relations. Members of the Indian diaspora have welcomed the visit, calling it a hopeful sign. “It’s a new chapter,” said Mann Parekh, a local resident. Kushagr Sharma, President of the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce, said, “This visit could boost bilateral trade and economic growth.”

With 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and over a million Indian citizens residing in Canada, Modi’s visit has sparked optimism across communities.
