10 injured as police, students clash in Bangladesh’s Patiya
At least 10 people, including four police personnel, were injured following a violent clash between police and members of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) outside Patiya Police Station in Chittagong’s Patiya sub-district on Tuesday night.
The confrontation reportedly began around 9 p.m. local time after SAD activists allegedly detained a leader of the ruling party’s student wing, the Chhatra League (CL), near the central Shaheed Minar. They brought the individual to the police station, demanding immediate action.
According to police officials, the situation escalated when SAD members attempted to create disorder within the station premises, prompting a physical confrontation. “They came to the police station with a procession and beat the banned Chhatra League leader inside. During the ensuing chaos, scuffles broke out and we had to drive them out,” said Zayed Nur, Officer-in-Charge of Patiya Police Station.
A general diary (GD) was filed, and four police officers were reported injured.
In retaliation, SAD launched a protest called the “Patiya Blockade” on Wednesday morning, further fueling unrest in the region.
Rizwan Siddiqqui, joint convener of the Chattogram metropolitan unit of SAD, accused the police of excessive force. “Our activists were beaten with batons. Several required medical attention,” he said, claiming six SAD leaders were injured in the first clash, followed by another altercation at 11:30 p.m. that left nine more activists hurt.
While media attempted to contact the police for further comment during the blockade, Officer Nur was reportedly unavailable. However, previous reports suggested that police did not initially plan to arrest the Chhatra League leader as no case had been filed, but growing tensions forced their hand.
