Zelensky, Trump discuss Ukraine’s air defence amid Russian strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone call with US President Donald Trump to discuss Ukraine’s air defence needs as Russian aerial attacks intensify across the country. The 40-minute call comes amid heightened tensions and concerns over delays in US military assistance.

Zelensky confirmed the discussion on social media, saying both leaders agreed to work jointly to strengthen Ukraine’s airspace protection. “We discussed air defence options and agreed to increase cooperation. Our teams will meet soon,” he posted.

The call follows a major Russian airstrike on July 4 that hit Kyiv and multiple regions, injuring at least 23 civilians and igniting several fires in the capital.

Zelensky also stated that they discussed defence industry collaboration, including the possibility of joint production and technology transfer. Topics covered included mutual procurement, investment, and Ukraine’s ongoing diplomatic efforts with the US and international partners.

Trump reportedly told Zelensky that the US is willing to support Ukraine’s air defence capabilities, Axios reported, citing anonymous sources. However, tensions remain over stalled military aid. The Trump administration recently paused shipments of Patriot missile systems and precision-guided munitions, citing a review of US stockpiles.

Meanwhile, Trump’s separate phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 3 ended in disappointment. Trump later told reporters he was “very disappointed” by Putin’s stance and added, “I don’t think he’s looking to stop this fighting.”

Despite frustrations over Russia’s ongoing aggression, the US has yet to approve new sanctions or military support packages for Ukraine since January.

Zelensky emphasized the urgency of enhanced cooperation, especially in drone and air defence technologies, as Russia continues its offensive and direct peace talks with Moscow yield limited results.
