PM Modi urges BRICS to adopt responsible AI governance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on BRICS nations to jointly promote the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing ethical innovation and global equity in AI development.
Speaking at the Outreach Session of the 17th BRICS Summit, focused on multilateralism, economic affairs, and AI, Modi advocated for an inclusive framework that aligns innovation with ethical governance. He highlighted India’s approach of ‘AI for All’, which is being implemented across multiple sectors to enhance human capabilities.
“We in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities,” he said. Modi also proposed creating a science and research repository for Global South nations within BRICS to boost resilience in critical mineral supply chains and promote responsible AI.
Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Dammu Ravi said that Modi reiterated BRICS’ role in shaping a multipolar world, calling diversity and multipolarity the group’s strengths.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who also participated in the session, warned that AI should not become “a club of the few.” He stressed the need for developing countries to have a say in global AI governance and urged reforms in international institutions such as the UN Security Council.
“Effective and fair AI governance requires confronting deeper structural imbalances in our global system,” Guterres said.
Modi invited BRICS leaders to participate in India’s upcoming ‘AI Impact Summit’ in 2026, as India prepares to take over BRICS chairmanship that year.
With BRICS gaining influence in shaping global policy, both leaders emphasized that AI governance must be inclusive, ethical, and aligned with the principles of a multipolar world.
