Trump signals new Russia sanctions, says he’s ‘not happy’ with Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the delivery of additional defensive weapons to Ukraine and indicated possible new sanctions against Russia, reflecting growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We’re sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine, and I’ve approved that,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday. He added, “I’m not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now,” citing the mounting casualties on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Trump also said he is weighing support for a bipartisan Senate bill proposing sweeping new sanctions on Russia. His remarks came amid heightened tensions following Moscow’s recent territorial gains and increased assaults on Ukrainian positions.

Earlier this week, Trump confirmed to reporters that additional U.S. weapons will be sent to Ukraine, describing them as primarily defensive. “They’re getting hit very, very hard,” he said, referring to Ukraine’s struggle on the battlefield.

The announcement followed a recent pause in certain U.S. arms shipments to Kyiv, which had alarmed Ukrainian officials and led to urgent diplomatic outreach.

Trump also disclosed details of a recent phone conversation with Putin. “We talked about a lot of things, including Iran and Ukraine. I didn’t make any progress with him at all,” he admitted, expressing frustration over the stalled peace process.

According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the nearly hour-long call touched on humanitarian agreements from earlier Russian-Ukrainian talks and reaffirmed Moscow’s intent to pursue its military and political goals. Ushakov said Putin also discussed broader Middle East tensions during the call.

As conflict grinds on, the U.S. appears to be recalibrating its support to Ukraine while keeping diplomatic channels open — albeit strained — with Moscow.
