PM Modi, President Lula hold ‘fruitful talks’ to boost India-Brazil ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held wide-ranging discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brasilia, focusing on strengthening and diversifying trade and strategic cooperation between India and Brazil.

“Held fruitful talks with President Lula, who has always been passionate about India-Brazil friendship,” PM Modi posted on X. “We discussed ways to deepen trade ties and diversify our economic partnership. We both agree there is immense scope for such linkages to thrive.”

The two leaders also explored collaboration in clean energy, sustainable development, climate change, defence, AI, and agriculture. Modi highlighted India-Brazil cooperation in key sectors like semiconductors, space, and digital public infrastructure (DPI), calling them critical to future development.

Earlier in the day, Brazil conferred its highest civilian award, The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, on PM Modi. This marks his 26th global honour and the third during his current five-nation tour, which began on July 2.

Following the ceremonial welcome at the Alvorada Palace—featuring a 114-horse escort and full military honours—the two leaders held a restricted-format meeting followed by delegation-level talks and a signing ceremony on multiple bilateral agreements.

PM Modi’s ongoing visit is seen as a key milestone in revitalizing the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership, originally established in 2006. It marks his fourth visit to Brazil, following earlier trips in 2014, 2019, and 2023.

During this tour, PM Modi has already received top civilian honours from Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago, with both nations lauding his global statesmanship, humanitarian outreach, and deep engagement with diaspora communities.
