PM Modi calls India-Namibia ties a ‘warm-up’ for greater growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a historic address to Namibia’s Parliament on Wednesday, using a cricket analogy to describe the immense potential of India-Namibia ties, saying both nations are just “warming up” and will “score faster and more” in the years ahead.

During his one-day State Visit, Modi underscored shared democratic values, historical bonds, and India’s growing role in supporting Namibia’s development goals. He hailed Namibia as a vital partner in the Global South and announced India’s support in areas like health, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation.

PM Modi highlighted key collaborations: setting up an Entrepreneurship Development Centre in Namibia, supplying a Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine for advanced cancer care, and a UPI-powered digital payments system—making Namibia the first country to adopt India’s digital payment technology.

He noted that over 1,700 Namibians have benefited from Indian scholarships and capacity-building programs and invited Namibia to join India’s Jan Aushadhi scheme for affordable medicines.

“Our development partnership in Africa exceeds $12 billion—but its real value lies in local skills, local jobs, and shared purpose,” Modi said.

He also celebrated Namibia joining key Indian-led global initiatives like the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

PM Modi received a standing ovation, with chants of “Modi, Modi” echoing in Parliament. This marks his third address to a foreign Parliament within a week, following speeches in Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago.

Earlier, Modi and Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah witnessed the signing of two MoUs in health and entrepreneurship, further strengthening bilateral ties.

Modi closed his speech by celebrating the democratic aspirations of both nations, saying, “When you have nothing, the Constitution gives you everything.”
