US warns Americans, especially Iranian Americans, against travel to Iran

The US State Department has issued a renewed warning to American citizens—particularly those of Iranian descent—urging them not to travel to Iran due to the ongoing risk of wrongful detention and abuse.
“US citizens should NOT travel to Iran for any reason,” the Department’s Consular Affairs office posted on X. “Dual US-Iranian nationals have been kidnapped, wrongfully detained, and even sentenced to death on false charges.”
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce highlighted that Iran does not recognize dual nationality and routinely denies consular access to detained US citizens. “Having a US passport or connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone,” Bruce warned.
To further spread awareness, the State Department has launched a dedicated website: state.gov/do-not-travel-to-Iran, reinforcing the existing travel advisory already listed at travel.state.gov.
Bruce emphasized the campaign’s urgency, noting that although open conflict has eased following 12 days of Iran-Israel escalation in June—during which the US struck Iranian nuclear sites—the travel environment remains extremely dangerous.
“Our message is clear and multilingual: Do not travel to Iran, especially for those with dual citizenship or Iranian heritage,” she said.
The advisory comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and underscores Washington’s concern for the safety of its citizens abroad, especially in regions with strained diplomatic relations.
