NCSSR holds first ethical committee meeting to guide sports science research
The National Centre for Sports Science and Research (NCSSR), operating under the Sports Authority of India (SAI), held its first Institutional Ethical Committee (IEC) meeting on July 18 at the SAI Head Office, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. The meeting marked a critical step in formalising ethical standards for sports science research involving human participants.
Chaired by Prof. Jugal Kishore, Director Professor and former Head of Community Medicine at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, the session brought together top experts from academic institutions and government bodies to establish ethical protocols and ensure scientific integrity.
The discussions focused on streamlining research approvals, protecting participant rights, and aligning practices with national and international ethical norms. “The IEC’s formation demonstrates our dedication to transparency and accountability in scientific work,” said Vishnu Kant Tiwari, Secretary, SAI.
Brig (Dr.) Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, Director of NCSSR and member secretary of the committee, emphasized the importance of responsible research oversight. “We aim to advance sports science while maintaining the highest ethical standards,” he stated.
Key topics included informed consent, data privacy, and the long-term health implications of research involving athletes. The committee reviewed processes for project submissions, evaluations, and ongoing monitoring.
Prof. Kishore underlined that ethical oversight in sports science is essential, given the involvement of both physical and psychological elements. “Our role is to support research that respects human dignity and ensures participant well-being,” he said.
The IEC pledged to embed ethical considerations at every research stage—from planning to publication—ensuring NCSSR’s work remains credible, responsible, and impactful.
