Israel recalls negotiators after Hamas response to Gaza ceasefire deal

Israel has recalled its negotiating team from Doha for consultations following Hamas’ response to a proposed ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed on Thursday.

The proposal, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and backed by the United States, includes a 60-day ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza, and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Hamas and other Palestinian factions submitted a joint response earlier in the day.

Israel acknowledged the mediators’ efforts and stressed that the talks had not collapsed. State-owned Kan TV reported the move was “coordinated” among all parties, and the negotiations remain on a “positive” track, though key decisions are pending.

However, gaps remain over prisoner numbers. According to Israeli media, Hamas has demanded the release of 200 Palestinians serving life sentences for killing Israelis and an additional 2,000 Gazans detained after October 7, 2023. This exceeds Israel’s offer of 125 life-term prisoners and 1,200 other detainees.

Channel 12 reported that the proposed exchange would involve 10 living hostages. Israeli sources suggest Hamas is creating new obstacles, though the proposal remains under review.

Meanwhile, Israel Hayom reported the Israeli military is preparing to intensify operations in Gaza if talks stall. A source cautioned that the delegation’s return from Qatar could signal deteriorating prospects for a deal.

Tel Aviv estimates about 50 Israeli hostages remain in captivity in Gaza. Over 10,800 Palestinians are currently imprisoned by Israel. Human rights groups have reported harsh conditions including torture and medical neglect.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 59,500 people, most of them women and children, and triggered a humanitarian catastrophe.
