Dengue claims three more lives in Bangladesh, 2025 death toll rises to 73
Bangladesh continues to battle a severe dengue outbreak as three more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, pushing the 2025 death toll to 73, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest fatalities occurred in Chattogram Division (outside City Corporation) and Dhaka South City Corporation. Meanwhile, 331 new dengue patients were hospitalized across the country, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in 2025 to 19,120, according to United News of Bangladesh (UNB).
The new cases were distributed across various regions: 132 in Barishal Division (outside City Corporation), 73 in Dhaka Division (outside City Corporation), 47 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 30 in Chattogram Division (outside City Corporation), 28 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 18 in Khulna Division (outside City Corporation), and 3 in Mymensingh Division.
DGHS data shows that dengue claimed 575 lives in Bangladesh in 2024, with over 101,000 cases recorded. Medical officials warn that the nature of the virus has become more aggressive and difficult to treat.
On July 9, DGHS Director General Abu Jafor stated that the current strain is causing patients to deteriorate rapidly, requiring intensive care and real-time monitoring. He emphasized the importance of using portable ultrasound and bedside hematocrit machines for faster diagnostics.
In support of the country’s dengue response, the World Health Organization (WHO) Bangladesh office provided 1,600 units of essential medical supplies, including 21 hematocrit machines and eight portable ultrasound devices, to DGHS.
Health officials urge the public to remain vigilant, seek immediate medical help in case of fever, and support ongoing efforts to combat the spread of dengue.
