Japanese vice minister discusses PM Modi’s Tokyo visit with Indian officials

Japan’s Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Takehiro Funakoshi, held key discussions in New Delhi with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Pramod Kumar Mishra, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to Japan later this year.

The talks were part of the India-Japan Vice-Ministerial Dialogue, which reviewed the full spectrum of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in security, economic growth, and people-to-people ties, especially in the context of the Indo-Pacific.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two officials also agreed to enhance collaboration under the Quad framework (India, Japan, U.S., and Australia) to promote a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

During the exchange, Misri and Funakoshi discussed a broad range of topics including defence and economic security, trade and investment, infrastructure development, technology cooperation, and regional affairs. They emphasized the importance of boosting mutual strategic alignment and regional stability.

Funakoshi also met with Pramod Kumar Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, where both sides further explored avenues for deepening bilateral ties ahead of Modi’s visit.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the dialogue was “instrumental in reviewing progress” across various dimensions and in identifying “new areas of collaboration.”

The engagement underscores the strategic convergence between New Delhi and Tokyo amid evolving regional dynamics and shared goals in the Indo-Pacific.
