Six killed in Bangkok market shooting, gunman dies by suicide

A mass shooting in Bangkok’s bustling Or Tor Kor market claimed the lives of six people and left two others injured on Monday, before the 61-year-old gunman fatally shot himself, local media reported.

The incident occurred around 12:38 p.m. in the Chatuchak district of the Thai capital, according to reports by Thairath citing rescue officials. The shooter, dressed in a black T-shirt and camouflage shorts, was later found dead on a bench inside the market, with a rucksack beside him.

His identity was confirmed via an ID card and driver’s license, revealing he was from Khong district in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Among the victims were four market security guards and one woman, according to the Erawan Emergency Medical Centre. Two other women sustained injuries and are being treated at Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital.

Police have cordoned off the market as a crime scene and launched a full investigation. Authorities urged nearby residents to stay indoors and advised the public to avoid the area until the situation is fully under control.

Investigators are also exploring whether the incident may be linked to recent violent clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border, though no official confirmation has been made. The timing coincides with escalating regional tensions and high-level peace talks.

Later in the day, Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet are expected to meet in Kuala Lumpur to discuss a ceasefire and de-escalation measures.

While mass shootings are relatively rare in Thailand, the country has witnessed a rise in gun-related incidents in recent years. Monday’s tragedy has once again raised questions about public safety, mental health, and gun control in the region.
