Indian delegation visits Syria to boost bilateral cooperation
An Indian delegation visiting Damascus held high-level talks with Syrian officials to explore new avenues of bilateral cooperation, particularly in diplomacy, healthcare, and education.
The delegation, led by Suresh Kumar, Director of the West Asia and North Africa Division at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, met with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani. The meeting focused on strengthening diplomatic ties and expanding collaboration to benefit both nations, according to a statement by Syria’s Foreign Ministry.
India has historically maintained stable relations with Syria, and this visit signals New Delhi’s continued interest in deepening its engagement with the war-torn nation as it rebuilds.
In a separate meeting with Syrian Health Minister Musab Al-Ali, discussions focused on enhancing healthcare cooperation. Key areas included pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical training, and drug exports.
Al-Ali emphasized Syria’s interest in developing long-term partnerships with India in healthcare, particularly to strengthen the country’s national health infrastructure and ensure access to essential medicines. He expressed optimism about India’s role in helping Syria overcome its current healthcare challenges.
The talks also covered the implementation of a scholarship program for Syrian students and the launch of an engineering-focused training initiative for Syrian government officials.
Suresh Kumar reaffirmed India’s commitment to capacity-building efforts in Syria. He noted that India would continue funding specialised training for Syrian professionals, including doctors and nurses, at Indian institutions.
The visit underscores India’s broader strategy of re-engagement with West Asia and highlights its support for Syria’s post-conflict reconstruction through education, healthcare, and human resource development.
