Gauff edges past Collins; Ito shocks Paolini at Canadian Open

Top seed Coco Gauff survived a tense three-hour battle to defeat fellow American Danielle Collins 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(2) in the second round of the Canadian Open, notching her first win since her French Open triumph in June.

In a dramatic match, Gauff came within two points of defeat in the third set as Collins erased deficits of 2-0 and 4-2. However, Collins never earned a match point, and Gauff rallied to win nine of the last 11 points in the final-set tiebreak.

“I was practicing well and didn’t transfer that to the match, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way,” Gauff said after the win. “Danielle is a great ball striker, so to break her multiple times today, there are positives to take.”

Next up, Gauff will face Veronika Kudermetova, who defeated No. 29 seed Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito pulled off the biggest upset of the day, stunning No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(5). Trailing by a set and 1-4, Ito saved a match point at 4-5 in the second set before completing a remarkable comeback in 2 hours and 27 minutes. Ito will next face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the third round.

Ito, who broke into the WTA Top 100 this May, secured her first WTA 1000 main-draw win this week, having previously won a WTA 125 title in Canberra in January.

Elsewhere, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu withdrew from her second-round match due to a left ankle injury, handing No. 4 seed Mirra Andreeva a walkover into the third round.
