
Man shot dead by police after assault in Melbourne suburb
A man was shot dead by police after he was seen assaulting a woman at a property in Yarra Junction, a town located about 55 km east of Melbourne, Victoria.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. According to a police statement, officers responded to reports of an assault and arrived to find the man attacking the woman. During the confrontation, one of the officers fired their weapon, striking the man.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, but the man could not be revived. The woman, who sustained serious injuries, was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities confirmed that the man and the woman knew each other.
A crime scene has been established, and detectives from the homicide squad have launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
This is the second violent incident involving firearms in Melbourne this month. On July 24, a man was seriously injured after being shot during a home invasion in Gladstone Park, located approximately 15 km northwest of Melbourne’s city center.
Police reported that a group of armed individuals broke into the home around 1:25 a.m., assaulted two occupants, and shot the male resident during a confrontation. The 60-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds and was hospitalized. A 57-year-old woman in the home was threatened with a firearm but was not injured.
The suspects fled the scene in an SUV. As of the morning of July 24, no arrests had been made. Investigators from the armed crime squad are handling the case, which police believe was a targeted attack.
