Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi met with Japan’s Defence Minister Gen Nakatani on Thursday during his official visit to Japan, aiming to enhance bilateral defence cooperation and address regional security challenges.

The two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening strategic and maritime collaboration, with discussions focusing on joint training, defence technology exchange, and expanding personnel engagement between the Indian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF).

“Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, during his ongoing visit to Japan, called on Gen Nakatani. Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral defence cooperation, fostering technological and industry collaboration, and strengthening training and personnel exchanges,” the Indian Navy posted on X.

The Navy added that the meeting reinforced both countries’ resolve to work together on emerging security concerns and advance their strategic partnership.

On Wednesday night, Indian Ambassador to Japan Sibi George hosted a dinner in Tokyo in honor of Admiral Tripathi. The event was attended by Defence Minister Nakatani and JMSDF Chief of Staff Admiral Saito Akira.

Admiral Tripathi’s four-day visit, from July 30 to August 2, aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ between India and Japan, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

He is also scheduled to meet with Vice-Minister of Defence Masuda Kazuo and hold talks with Admiral Akira. Additionally, the Indian Navy chief will visit JMSDF units and interact with the Commander-in-Chief of Japan’s Self-Defence Fleet at the Funakoshi naval base.

The visit aims to further consolidate India-Japan defence ties, strengthen maritime domain awareness, and promote regional stability through enhanced naval cooperation and shared strategic understanding.
