Trump administration halts UCLA research funding over antisemitism claims
The Trump administration has suspended federal research funding to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), citing allegations of antisemitism and bias, university officials confirmed on Thursday.
UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said in a statement that the suspension impacts grants administered by federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “This is not only a loss to the researchers who rely on critical grants. It is a loss for Americans across the nation whose work, health, and future depend on the groundbreaking work we do,” Frenk stated.
According to the Los Angeles Times, approximately 300 grants totaling nearly $200 million have been affected. Frenk expressed concern that the decision jeopardizes hundreds of projects and livelihoods, and added, “This far-reaching penalty of defunding life-saving research does nothing to address any alleged discrimination.”
The move follows a U.S. Department of Justice civil rights investigation, which accused UCLA of being “deliberately indifferent” to antisemitic harassment during pro-Palestinian protests on campus in 2024.
Earlier this week, UCLA agreed to a $6.45 million settlement over a lawsuit involving alleged mistreatment of Jewish students and a professor. Despite the suspension, Frenk emphasized that the university has taken “robust actions” to create a safe, inclusive campus for all students.
UCLA is the latest elite university to face federal action over antisemitism claims. Columbia University recently agreed to a $200 million settlement, while Brown University reached a $50 million deal with the Trump administration. In March, the U.S. Department of Education launched investigations into 60 universities, including Harvard and Yale, regarding allegations of antisemitic discrimination.
