India hands over first electric buses to Mauritius under green partnership

India has handed over the first batch of 10 electric buses to Mauritius, marking a major step in the two countries’ green development partnership. The handover ceremony, held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Reduit, was led by Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava and Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

The event was attended by top Mauritian officials and dignitaries. It reaffirmed the strong development cooperation and strategic ties agreed upon during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Mauritius in March 2025.

Describing the electric buses as “moving symbols of our friendship and commitment to a greener planet,” High Commissioner Srivastava emphasized India’s commitment to people-centric and sustainable development in Mauritius.

PM Ramgoolam praised the project as a “paradigm shift in public transport” and highlighted its role in reducing carbon emissions, lowering fuel imports, and creating green jobs. He also acknowledged India’s support in critical sectors such as the blue economy, artificial intelligence, maritime security, and food systems.

India’s broader green support to Mauritius includes the development of an 8 MW solar PV farm in Henrietta, installation of 100 solar street lights, and a community solar farm in Rodrigues.

India has long been Mauritius’s key development partner, contributing to major projects like the Metro Express, Supreme Court building, ENT hospital, social housing units, and educational technology. These initiatives continue to benefit all sectors of Mauritian society.
