Fort Stewart shooting leaves 5 soldiers injured in Georgia

Five soldiers were injured in a shooting at Fort Stewart, a major U.S. Army base in southeast Georgia, after a fellow soldier opened fire during an active shooter incident on Wednesday.

The shooter was identified as Quornelius Radford, an automated logistics sergeant, according to Major General John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division. Lubas confirmed that Radford used a personal handgun, not a military-issued weapon, to carry out the attack.

“We’re still unsure about the motive,” Lubas said in a press briefing. “Army investigators have begun interviewing Radford, and we expect more clarity soon.”

All five injured soldiers were treated at the scene and transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital. Officials reported they are in stable condition and expected to recover.

The base was placed under lockdown at 11:04 a.m. (local time), which was lifted by the afternoon after the threat was neutralized. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing risk to the public or military personnel.

The FBI’s Savannah office is working with the Army Criminal Investigation Division to investigate the incident. The suspect had previously been arrested locally for driving under the influence, though officials have not confirmed if that history played a role in the shooting.

Located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest U.S. Army post east of the Mississippi River and home to thousands of soldiers and their families.

This shooting has raised renewed concerns over gun safety and mental health among military personnel. The Army has yet to disclose whether the suspect had any known behavioral issues prior to the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
